Golden Reserve , a son of Sir Ivor – Golden Circlet, by Round Table was foaled in 1974. He was a winner of $175,774 on the racetrack, including the Grade II Tidal Habdicap at 11 furlongs, in which he defeated the Eclipse Award winner Bowl Game.
After his racing career was over he was bought by a syndicate headed by Wally Leung and imported to British Columbia for stud duty. In this province he sired 18 stakes winners and his offspring have earned over five million dollars. At the time of his death in 1992 at the age of eighteen his average earnings index was 1.31, a very high value for a horse that spent his whole stud career in this province and one that is considerably higher than the comparable index of the mares to which he was bred.
Golden Reserve sired four different Horses of the Year in British Columbia, a feat that may never be equaled; these were Rumpole (1984), Delta Colleen (1988), Fleet Reserve (1989) and Avant’s Gold (1991). Only one other horse (Hail to Victory) has sired more than one Horse of the Year.
Delta Colleen retired in 1993 as the richest British Columbia-bred of all time with earnings of $810,798. She also holds the record for stakes wins at Exhibition Park with 18. Avant’s Gold was a Sovereign Award winner in 1991 as Canada’s champion older filly or mare. |
